BTS 3/13/06: Hamas Update; South Dakota Abortion Law; Academic Freedom

On tonight’s program we look at the difficulties facing the newly elected Hamas in government, as well as the pitfalls and dangers they represent for a post-Sharon Israel as they move toward elections later this month. Hisham Ahmed joins us from the West Bank.

We then turn to the attack on women represented by the law passed last week in South Dakota that bans abortion even in the case of rape and incest. Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority joins us.

In our final segment Bob Samuels talks about the assault on academic freedom and higher education.

1. Hisham Ahmed is Associate Professor of Political Science at Bir Zeit University in the West Bank. He is the author of a 1994 book on Hamas, “From Religious Salvation to Political and Social Transformation.”

2. One of the architects of the modern drive for women’s equality, Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal is known as a political analyst, strategist, and grassroots organizer. Formerly, as President of the National Organization for Women, Smeal led the drive to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), the largest nationwide grassroots and lobbying campaign in the history of the modern women’s movement. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, Smeal holds an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida and an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Duke University.

3. Robert Samuels is a Lecturer in the Writing Programs at the UCLA. He is the author of Between Philosophy and Psychoanalysis (Routledge Press, 1993).
